Outdoor Adventure

The Outdoor Adventure Program which commenced in 2007, is open to all students in Years 7 to 10 who are enthusiastic about the outdoors and want to enrich their understanding in this context.

The course is designed to enhance the learning of students across all learning areas in an outdoor education context.  The class is selected in Year 7 and whilst students complete the program at the end of Year 10, they are able to continue their studies into Year 11 and 12 through a range of Outdoor Education courses and Certificate courses on offer.  Students in the senior years enhance their leadership skills by acting as mentors and leaders to the incoming Year 7 group.

The program has been identified as an endorsed program by the Department of Education and Kalamunda SHS is the only school to offer this program.

Performing Arts

After 30 years of an outstanding Gifted and Talented Visual Arts program, we now offer two Performing Arts Programs. The general program commenced in 2012 and includes Dance, Drama and Music studies.  Since its inception the program has gone from strength to strength.  In 2017 a Specialist Music Program has been introduced.

The Performing Arts Program promotes and develops excellence across the performing arts. It also provides pathways through Middle and Senior School for students who wish to enrich their learning through the development of arts ideas, skills and processes and creative and critical thinking.

Kalamunda Senior High School has access to a 250 seat Performing Arts Centre and excellent Music facilities. Students are able to access these for both lessons and for performances.

Students will work across the three Performing Arts disciplines and will be able to specialise in one or more of these as they progress through the school.

Potential candidates should have a passion for Performing Arts but do not need to show proficiency in all three of the disciplines.

Academic Excellence

Kalamunda Senior High School prides itself on offering opportunities for students to extend and enrich their academic studies.

The Academic Excellence Program has been running in the school since 2004 and is designed to support our top academic students in achieving excellence in all areas of study. It not only develops academic talent but also leadership, resilience and persistence, all to enhance each individual student’s ability to achieve success at school and beyond.

Students are streamed together for English, Mathematics, Science and Society and Environment so that they are able to work at a pace more suited to their needs.

Excursions, guest speakers, special programs and links to University programs are all available to these students.

In addition the Academic Excellence Program Coordinator works closely with the Student Services team, in particular the School Psychologist, in running a wellbeing program for these students. Part of the program aims to help students deal with the stress and pressure sometimes experienced by high achievers.

Music

Welcome to music! We have a diverse music program here at Kalamunda Senior High School featuring a strong IMMS instrumental program and supporting class music curriculum.

Students are regularly involved in performances both in school and the wider community. Each year students perform at the ANZAC service, mid-year concert, Rock Night, KPA showcases and the Twilight Concert. Outside of school, many students are involved in various music festivals supported by IMSS and local shows such as: The Kalamunda Show, tours and Stirkfest.

Our vibrant music program is mostly centred around a contemporary music program, however, the hybrid nature of the program has also allowed the traditional classical ensembles to flourish. We have two concert bands, a String Orchestra, Guitar Ensembles, Choirs and Rock Bands as well as many other smaller groups of quartets, and trios that emerge each year; catering for more advanced students. There is a specialised Kalamunda Performing Arts Music stream (KPAM) which focuses on crafting musicianship and performance skills to higher levels and entry is by audition.

Soccer

The Kalamunda SHS Soccer Program started in 2016 and from 2025 will be open to all students enrolling at the school in Years 7-10. The program is open to any student who is interested in the game of soccer, whether they are playing for the first time or wanting to improve their game and take it to the next level.

What’s included in the program?

• Up to three (3) hours per week to develop skills in both technical and tactical sessions run by our external providers, Football Evolution Training, with whom we have been associated for the past five (5) years.
• Opportunities to compete in the SSWA Regional Pennants Competition.
• Full soccer uniform including, shirt, shorts and socks, provided by Macron.
• Opportunity to gain accreditation in the Mini-Roos Certificate Coaching Course which introduces soccer to newcomers in an inclusive way. This two-hour course is designed for people who coach children aged 4-9 years.
• Opportunity to coach students at neighbouring primary schools in the City of Kalamunda.

What is the selection process?

• Entry into the Soccer Program for 2025 will be through a selection process for students currently in Year 7 at Kalamunda SHS and for Year 6 students who are enrolling at the school for 2025.
• Trials include a variety of tests that target physical, technical, tactical and overall gameplay ability.
• Successful applicants will be offered a position in the program for the following year.
• Written communication will be sent via email to advise the outcome of your child’s application.
